Rustic Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Rural Kaikoura NZ
For a rural retreat in Kaikoura NZ, try Dylans rustic cottage bed and breakfast. Dylans Country Cottages is two unique rustic bed and breakfast cottages, Mahoe and Kowhai. They are in a rural setting beneath the spectacular Seaward Kaikoura mountain range. Dylans is only five minutes from central Kaikoura, 2.5 hours drive from Christchurch, and 2 hours drive from the Picton ferries.
Each cottage has an upstairs mezzanine bedroom with beds made from Macrocarpa grown on the property. The French doors in the lounge open onto the garden, which gives New Zealand’s famed indoor-outdoor flow. The kitchenette area is small and basic but more than adequate to make breakfast and simple meals.
The cottages were not built with the needs of people with limited mobility in mind. The toilets are not wheelchair accessible. People with limited mobility are unlikely to manage the stairs. Similarly the stair design may mean they are unsuitable for people with limited sight. There is a comprehensive set of photographs of the interior of the cottages so you can determine their suitability for our needs.
Similarly the cottages were not built with children in mind. Children must be supervised when upstairs.
You can order a packed lunch or evening meal. These need to be ordered 24 hours in advance, however.
The lavender and flower gardens of Lavendyl surround the cottages. These are separate from Dylans; guests are free to wander in them at their leisure. The gardens are open to the public during the day. There is an on-site gift shop that stocks quality lavender products and other gift items. You can also order these online.
Lavendyl is also home to Buster. He is a super friendly springer spaniel and is always willing to provide companionship.

Daily Seasonal Breakfast
We provide a homemade continental breakfast for you to enjoy in the comfort of your cottage. A typical breakfast will have orange juice, muesli, yogurt, eggs from our chickens, and freshly baked bread. The eggs are fresh for you to cook as you wish. We pride ourselves on the bread selection we offer, from Scottish morning rolls to French baguettes, croissants, and Brioche made from scratch on-site.
Coffee, Tea & Assorted Beverages
We stock your cottage with a selection of tea, coffee, and milk. Relax with a cup of Lavendyl’s lavender tea. Drinking chocolate is available on request. We can provide speciality milk can be provided, but you must request this 24 hours in advance.
Dinner Upon Request
We can provide you with an evening meal if you wish. You must book this at least 24 hours in advance.
We understand that people may have special dietary needs and can cater for these.
Lovely secluded cottages with stunning views. Wonderful, friendly and accommodating host who also happens to make the best homemade bread in Kaikoura!
Key Amenities
Free WiFi
The cottages have Wifi. However, this is rural New Zealand. Although the service is usually good, it can be a little slow at times.
Secure Off-Road Parking
All parking is off road. There is ample parking adjacent to each cottage for a trailer.
Private Balcony
Each cottage has it's own private balcony where you can enjoy the sunset, mountain views or the clear night sky.
Laundry
Our laundry machines are in an area not accessible to guests, so we will launder for you: Give us your washing, we will wash and line dry it and return it to you ready to fold. If the weather is wet, we will tumble dry. The real bonus here is that you don't have to spend valuable holiday time on laundry.
Gardens
Guests have exclusive use of Lavendyl’s gardens outside Lavendyl’s opening hours. There are relaxing places to sit, animals to interact with and beautiful views.
The gardens are an amazing dark sky setting. There are spectacular views of the Milky Way. They make a marvellous setting for night sky photography.
Barista Coffee
The on site shop has Barista coffee and lavender treats.
The Mahoe cottage has it’s own Barista coffee machine.
House Rules
Smoking is not allowed in any of the rooms or balconies. If you do smoke, then you may be charged for cleaning. Smoking is permitted outside only.
Similarly, candles may be burned outside but not inside or on the balcony. This is due to the fire risk they pose.
Guests must leave the cottages as they find them. An excessively untidy cottage, which requires additional cleaning, will incur an additional $20 charge. We will charge $20 for unwashed dishes.
We will charge for any damage to the room or property.
Cancellation Policy
Late cancellations have a significant impact on our small business, so we have a strict cancellation policy.
- Cancellation within 14 days is non-refundable.
- Cancellation 30-15 days prior is 50% refundable.
- Over 30 days fully refunded.
As Coronavirus is now well-understood, we no longer treat it exceptionally. However, if you can't stay with us due to Coronavirus, you may reschedule your stay at no additional cost.
Checkin & Checkout
Checkin is available from 14:00. Checkout is by 10:00. We accommodate late checkout/early arrival where possible.
Quiet Hours 11:00pm to 7:00am
Guests are asked not to use the balcony during quiet hours so as not to disturb other guests.
Guests are asked to ensure that noise is kept down to a level that will not disturb other guests during quiet hours.
Guests are asked not to play music outside during quiet hours.
Pet Policy
Dogs are allowed in the Kowhai cottage but please contact us prior to booking. We do not accept young dogs because of the large amount of wood in the cottage.
Dogs must be kept inside or tied up outside during Lavendyl's opening hours.
Dogs are not allowed on the furniture nor upstairs under any circumstances.
Guests are liable for the cost of repair of any damage caused by their dog.
There is a $20 per stay per dog charge.
